Afamily whose home was buried during a landslide in Togo, Qamea last month received housing assistance on Friday from the Fiji Red Cross Society in Labasa.

Mother of three, Kelera Tokailoqi said even though it has been a while after the tragic incident occurred, they were still haunted by it. “It was like watching a movie when it happened,” she said. “I am not able to sleep properly in the night as the images keep repeating itself in my head. “All of it, the moment when I heard the rumbling sound, the roof falling on us and the shrieks of my youngest as he searched for help and these images appear in my head every time when I sleep. “We are still traumatised. The worst is my youngest child who panics when it rains and worse when there is thunder and lightning.” The family was donated all they needed for them to set up a makeshift home with necessary materials they would need. “This would be the first donation for us as other families in the village have been receiving assistance because we have been in Labasa since the incident,” Ms Tokailoqi said. She said she had followed her husband to Labasa because he was one of the two victims airlifted from Taveuni after sustaining major injuries following the landslide. “He is recovering very slowly. He suffered deep cuts to his right hand and left leg,” 32-year-old said.

Thirty-four-year-old Tuicolo Maiseaqaqa is still admitted at the Labasa Hospital, Ms Tokailoqi left for Qamea on Saturday to set up their home and prepare their children for another school year.
