ASSOCIATION CONDEMNS ATTACK, THREAT
The Fijian Media Association strongly condemns the threats and disgraceful physical attack against a Fiji Sun journalist outside the Suva Court house yesterday. A man tried to stop Fiji
Sun reporter, Jessica Gounder from taking photos of an accused person in a case. FMA General Secretary Stanley Simpson said the attack was unacceptable – and again urged the public to understand the role of journalists and the work that they do.
“Journalists are performing a public service at the Courthouse by reporting on the cases that appear before our judiciary,” Mr Simpson said.
“This allows the public to see what is happening in our society, and more importantly that the laws of the country are being enforced, that a fair trial is being administered, and that justice and the rule of law is being served and adhered to.
“They are well within their right to do so, and media freedom must be respected.”
“People are advised to have conversations with journalists, media organisations or the authorities if they have a grievance – but not to resort to threats, physical violence or other unlawful actions.” Mr Simpson said journalists must be able to report freely and without intimidation.
“We live in a free and democratic country and people need to respect, appreciate and understand the hard work journalists do every day to get the news under trying circumstances.”
Police are investigating the incident.
