A woman can do what a man can do! For Constable Vaseva Rokotiko becoming the first woman in the Fiji Police Force to train on a Police motorcycle is a boost in her career. She joined 30 male Police officers yesterday at the Muanikau Community Post in Nasese, Suva, for the training. And as the country celebrates International Women’s Day today, she said women should never limit themselves because a person could do almost anything if they set their mind to it. “I am the first female in my family to take up this career and I only have one motive – to work hard and serve the people of my country,” she said.

Drivers, don’t be surprised if you get pulled over by a female Police officer on a bike! Yes, that’s right.

The public will soon get to see the country’s first female Police officer, Vaseva Rokotiko, patrolling our streets on two wheels. The 23-year-old woman Police constable joined 30 other male Police officers who were trained on how to ride a motorcycle.

The training was held at the Muanikau Community Post in Nasese, Suva, yesterday.

Ms Rokotiko said: “At first I was really shocked when I was told that I would be the only female to be part of this training.

“I feel comfortable being the only female because this training is part of my job.

“It was always my dream to become a Police officer and serve people of Fiji,” she said. “Women are equal to men in every field and they should be given opportunities to prove themselves,” she said.

“I am the first female in my family to take up the career and I only have one motive - to work hard and serve the people of my country.”

Constable Rokotiko is from Kavula, Lekutu, Bua, in Vanua Levu. She joined the Fiji Police Force in 2013. She is currently on duty with the Police Special Responses Unit at the Police Mobile Unit in Nasinu.

“This training is one of the best done by the Fiji Police Force and it will help officers response quickly during emergencies,” she said.

She also wished all the women in Fiji a Happy International Women’s Day. “Never limit yourself because of others. “You can do almost anything if you set your mind to it,” she said.

Training co-ordinator Corporal Satish Prasad said: “This is the first motorcycle training done by the 31 Police officers from the Central and Eastern Division in 2017.”

“A similar training has been organised for our Police officers in the Western and Northern divisions.

“We are providing this training to our Police officers because motorcycles are fast and efficient, and the officers can response quickly during emergencies.”

The training ends on March 24.
