Athree-day handicraft show has been organised by the Ministry of Women for the women of Northern Division to showcase their talents.

The registration yesterday at the Friendly North Inn in Labasa attracted more than 150 women from Taveuni, Kioa and Rabi islands. Among the first few registered were Alumeci Vakayaravosa and Maca Hill from Taveuni Island. Mrs Vakayaravosa, a mother of six children, said she was excited about taking part.

“My aim is to qualify for the National Women’s Expo, which will be held in Suva this year in June,” Mrs Vakayaravosa said.

“Last year during the Cakaudrove and Bua handicraft show in Savusavu we won a special prize for making the best wall hanging handicraft. “This year we have put together new items likes shoes, garland, fans and other accessories.”

Lisi Malolonga from Savusavu, but originally from Kioa Island, said she brought a special healing cream and soap for various bodily diseases.

“I have been selling it for so many years and many people have returned thanking me for selling the products,” she said.

“I thought to display and sell it during this show so that people in Labasa can benefit from it.” Terikano Takesau, a member of Banaban Women’s Group from Rabi Island said they have been taking part for the past five years. “We are proud to represent our island through the handicraft displayed and it is our hope that this year again we can go to Suva for the National Women’s Expo,” Ms Takesau said.

The Fiji Arts Council will select 25 women to take part in the National Women’s Expo.
