Navoci Village Council urges swift implementa­tion of village bylaws

Avillage in Nadi has urged the swift implementa­tion of the Draft Village By-Laws. Navoci Village Council pledged its support of the document which is currently under public consultati­on.

Yesterday at the village, in Nadi, youth coordinato­r Asinate Dawai said: “We suggest the village by-law be implemente­d swiftly.

“The reasons for support is that the location of our villages in an urban setting.

“We see this by-law as a way to protect the iTaukei especially during this change and developmen­t that is fast occurring in the country today.”

She was speaking on behalf of the turaga ni Koro Navoci Epeli Saukuru and turaga ni mataqali Savusavu, Tomasi Naulumatua. She said many changes were inevitable and beneficial but some influenced the iTaukei negatively making them subjective to change.

“Our village is situated close to the main town and the developmen­ts and changes occur very fast where most of iTaukei are subjective and have seem to have forgotten the law of the village.”

The yavusa-no-i-Naiqoro have long been wating for something like a legal framework to help support or encourage the way of life of the iTaukei in a village,” she said.

“As part of our sincere appreciati­on, we request the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs to quickly implement the village by-laws in its procedures.”
