AFiji Roads Authority (FRA), representative in the Northern Division says the team will look into claims of poor road maintenance in the province of Bua. The comments were made by FRA Northern representative Rupeni Oli during the Bua Provincial Council Meeting in Nabouwalu yesterday. Tui Wainunu Ratu Orisi Baleitavea told the meeting that the Navakasiga-Nasau Road had been poorly repaired.

Ratu Orisi claimed those who fixed the road failed to deliver as promised when the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama visited the area in February.

“They said they would address the road issues there through proper maintenance work.

“But I was there recently and the villagers have continued to complain about this.

“And rightfully so, the road condition is not as expected.

“The gravels not evenly spread. There is a certain culvert that has been replaced, but it is not effective and after seeing this it raises questions as to who has given approval for it because it failed to function as expected.”

To this end, Mr Oli said: “I have to honestly say that I have not visited the road recently, but I will do so and report to the provincial administrator’s office accordingly.” Meanwhile, Tui Vuya Ratu Amenatavu Rabona said: “In my experience the Department of National Roads did a better job.

“This is because they had a depot here in Nabouwalu with road inspectors and the likes.

“Now all we see are a lot of contractors and their office is all the way in Savusavu.”

Mr Oli said Fulton Hogan Highways was FRA’s main contractor and was responsible for recruiting subcontractors.
