The Fiji Red Cross Society (FRCS) helped secure and shelter a water source for the villagers of Dromuninuku in Naweni, Cakaudrove.

FRCS director general Filipe Nainoca said his workers dug out and identified the water source, secured it with concrete and built a filtering system.

“The filteration and closed system will allow the clean spring water to go straight to the taps of the villagers of Dromoninuku,” Mr Nainoca said.

The $50,000 project includes a communal block which has three toilets and two bathrooms for the 300 villagers. It took three weeks to complete. Village headman Luke Ramasima praised the FRCS for the facility which would protect the sourcing of the spring at the village.

“This is a much needed development in our village and its eventuation has brought about so many positive changes especially with regards to hygiene and quality safe drinking water,” Mr Ramasima said.

“Before the spring where we sourced our water from was unprotected, meaning it usually got contaminated with rubbish which sometimes made its way to the spring. “It has been 20 years we have been drinking from this spring source.”

Mr Nainoca said the Red Cross volunteers found new ways to complete the project. “Our volunteers and staff are finding creative and innovative ways to adapt local solutions to reach out to people in need and help them prepare for, deal with and recover from such challenges,” he said. “We want to thank the community for their support and engagement in the complexity of this project.”
