While some players have impressed Vodafone football coach Christophe Gamel at the Vodafone Fiji FACT on Thursday, the level of indiscipline by the players was disappointing.

Three red and 16 yellow cards were given on day one at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.

Gamel said players need to learn to control themselves and play smart football while also enjoying the game.

“Too many players getting red and yellow cards for nothing in four games,” Gamel said.

“Players could easily control themselves and do something better. The fans that show up do not come to see that, they come to see good quality football. “Players need to enjoy the game but not in this way. I am not saying the players need to be hard to win a one-on-one but there is a difference between having a oneonone and kicking someone to injure him for nothing.

“Sometimes you need to use your body in a good way, not for dirty things.

“I am happy with the first day because it is not easy when you play in the first day of a tournament.”

With the upcoming international friendly game against Solomon Islands next week Thursday, Gamel will be present at the tournament today and tomorrow to select players to represent the country.

“The level of competition is good but it was not exactly to my expectation, there was too much kick and chase,” he said.”

“We have to work for the future which is very important, we need to give and develop the young ones.

“I will only have one day to prepare the boys for the game against the Solomon Islands.”
