Archbishop to Catholic leaders: Be informed when it comes to political involvement
Catholic leaders were reminded of their roles on how to participate effectively and be informed when it comes to their political involvement. This was the plea to leaders during a oneday seminar on ‘Reading the Signs of the Times in Fiji’ – Catholic Social Teaching and Socio-Political Issues yesterday. Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji Archbishop Peter Loy Chong if anything, the event was more about empowerment than anything else.
Sessions included a Historical Analysis of Power in Fiji, Care of the Vanua, the draft village by-laws, and a brief explanation on key principles of the Catholic social teachings.
The panel of speakers included Alisi Daurewa, Archbishop Loy Chong, Na Marama Bale Na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa, the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, John Vonokula, Vani Catanasiga, Rev Apisalome Tudreu, and Mareta Tikoisuva amongst others.
Other discussions included mining and the impact on the environment, the proper consultation with villages on such issues and its impact, the threat to coral reefs, and the impact of climate change. Overall he was happy with the event and the turnout at St Joseph’s Secondary School Hall, Suva.
Over 150 participants turned up for the one day seminar Catholic chiefs, women leaders, youths, and members of the civil society organisations.
The seminar was organised by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Suva Justice and Development Commission and they plan to hold similar sessions in the West and North later in the year.
