Vusiya Bridge

Suva

The Vusiya Bridge, located at the far end of Vuci Road, Nausori, at the junctions of Korociriciri Road, Raralevu Road and Vusiya Road is a vital link for residents in the area to get to the town centre.

This one-way lane concrete bridge is used daily by all kinds of vehicles but the vehicle arriving first there has the right of way to cross. The bridge is about 30 feet in length and runs over a creek which is about 30 feet below.

The width of the bridge just allows a vehicle to go through at a time and there is now walkway for pedestrians. Anyone walking and intends to cross the bridge has to do find an opening when there is no traffic and cross at their own risk. This includes school children and the elders.

The concrete deck surface of the bridge has deteriorated over time. The bridge has no protective side rails to prevent a fall. There are pipes incorporated in the outer beams and supported by the bridge structure and this adds to the risk factor of excessive weight.

The bridge has done its time, has exceeded its useful life cycle and a new one must be included in the strategic planning of the relevant authorities in the near future as a progressive and corrective measures. This is a hazardous spot which must be eliminated without delay for the safety of the public.
