The Labasa Secondary Schools Netball Association won the bid to host the 2017 Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Annual Tournament.

This was confirmed yesterday by Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Association president Unaisi Vuetaki. She said the decision was made during the 2016 annual general meeting at Suva Grammar School. Labasa Zone president and All Saints Secondary School principal Serafina Saukilagi said preparations were well underway to host this annual tournament which was the culmination of the FSSNA netball season.

The three-day tournament is from August 10 to 12 at Subrail Park, Labasa.

“This is the first time the tournament will be held in the North, a breakthrough for Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Association,” Vuetaki said.

“Schools in the Bua, Savusavu, Taveuni and Labasa zones should use this opportunity to showcase their talents and skills for the selectors who will be around during the tournament.” Meanwhile, Ratu Finau College from Lakeba, Lau, and Gau Secondary School have shown interest to take part in the Maritime Zone meet scheduled for Monday, August 7, at the National Netball Centre from 4.30pm.

“This is a great boost to the other schools and those in the maritime zone. This year, we are expecting stiffer competitions from the schools in the North as they wish to stamp their mark on home soil. They will also have their home crowd cheering them on,” she said. However, last year’s champions Suva Grammar School Under-15 and 17) and St Joseph’s Secondary School (Under-19) will fight tooth and nail to retain the titles. The two schools in Suva Zone II are currently battling it out during their weekly competition to secure a sport in the annual tournament. “Zone presidents must ensure that all schools participating at the zone level, pay their affiliation fee of $100 to FSSNA,” Vuetaki said.
