The Suli Degei captained- Warwick Navosa rugby side top the Vodafone Vanua Championsh­ip’s Western Zone with a 19-16 win over Lautoka at Lawaqa Park (ground 2), Sigatoka yesterday.

Lautoka drew first blood when Amena Cinaturaga kicked in a penalty, 3-0. In the 11th minute referee Josaia Caucau awarded a penalty try to Navosa after an infringeme­nt by the Lautoka defence as they led 7-3. Degei copped a yellow card for profession­al foul.

In the 32nd minute Cinaturaga narrowed the deficit to 7-6 with a successful penalty.

Navosa 7–6 Lautoka. In the 54th minute Cinaturaga kicked in his third penalty as they regained the lead 9-7. Venisio Kunabuli came off the bench in the 58th minute, moments later scored a try in the corner with Naca Nagatalevu converting it as Navosa went ahead 14-9. Then in the 63rd minute Navosa scored another try to Maleli Rokoqica. with a minute from full time Autiko Domonakiba­u ran in Lautoka’s try which was converted by Mesake Saukuru but was to no avail.

Navosa trainer Seru Navuta said; “Today’s game showed that we need to fix up a lot of areas before the semifinal next week. But credit to the boys we managed to remain undefeated throughout the competitio­n and top the western conference.”

Lautoka coach Usaia Koroilagil­agi said, “That’s the result but we’ve joined them to qualify for the semifinal.”
