The University of Fiji has plans to introduce a course on domestic violence.

While plans were still in the pipeline, University of Fiji Vice Chancellor Professor Prem Misir confirmed this at a press conference in Lautoka yesterday.

The university however hopes to seek funding for this course.

“It’s been very difficult to raise funds, but I am receiving some pledges. Once those pledges become a reality, the University of Fiji will have a Violence Against Women Unit,” he said.

Professor Misir said violence is not subjected to an individual, group or gender biased, but it is a growing problem that needs to be addressed.

“I think the Fijian Government Professor Misir said violence is not subjected to an individual, group or gender biased, but is a growing problem that needs to be addressed.

is also aware of this and they are also conducting their own awareness,” he said.

Professor Misir said they want to play a role in that process too, but their approach would be research based.

By this, he explained that research would enable them to gather evidence, new knowledge and innovations to combat violence against women. The academic added that they will also develop or design the kind of interventions that is necessary to prevent violence against women. Meanwhile, the university will also introduce other new courses.

They have yet to draw the list of the courses.

Professor Misir said this year in their Semester Two, one of the new courses on offer is ecotourism.

“When I came here, I was a little taken aback because this Western Division is a gateway to all tourism and this university did not have any tourism courses.

“I am glad that the School of Business and Economics has taken a lead here and there will be more things happening on that front,” he said. Other short courses are also in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, the university’s Open Day will be held tomorrow and on Saturday.
