Stop it! Domestic violence must not be tolerated: Manisha Kumar

The Duavata Northern Crime Prevention carnival contestant Manisha Kumar is concerned about the recurrence of domestic violence. Ms Kumar hopes to highlight its alarming rate in society during the weeklong event in Labasa.

All Saints Secondary School Year 13 Arts student, Ms Kumar, is sponsored by the Labasa Town Council.

She said everyone’s effort was needed to address domestic violence in our country. “This is an opportunit­y to share informatio­n regarding domestic violence in order to create awareness,” Ms Kumar said.

“In Fiji, women have experience­d physical or sexual violence from their husbands or partners,” she said. “Recurrence of domestic violence has left some children without their mothers. This needs to be addressed extensivel­y.”

Ms Kumar said violence against women is happening in our communitie­s – in the home, in the workplace, and even at places where we relax and have fun.

What was your reaction when you were chosen to be a contestant?

I was happy and excited to be a mouthpiece to address violence against women

What was your motivation in entering this year’s Duavata Carnival?

The alarming increase in violence against women in Fiji is a concern and I would like to use the platform to create awareness.

What are you looking forward to at the carnival?

For the families in the North to come and enjoy the week long carnival.

Who is your greatest inspiratio­n by far?

My parents always motivate me.
