National Fire Authority acting chief executive Mileta Seniroqa was impressed yesterday at the completion of the one week training conducted by the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Training instructors.

“The training has boosted the firefighters competencies in firefighting and high-rise rescue operation which will help them and the National Fire Authority,” Ms Seniroqa said.

Fifteen firefighters completed the one week training which was conducted at the NFA headquarters in Suva by the Indonesian experts. Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department head of training Mr Saepuloh was overwhelmed with the capabilities of Fijian firefighters.

“The NFA firefighters are very skillful and we are impressed with their competencies in Firefighting and Rescue operations,” Mr Saepuloh said.

“We have also learnt some techniques from the firefighters as well.”

Ms Seniroqa said some of training was new for the firefighters and had provided a new set of skills for them.

“This is the first time that we have such a highly specialised training conducted by the team of specialists,” she said.

“The training was also very intense as for the most part of the training involved high rise building rescue.

“Some of the newly learnt skills such as ‘rapelling training’ with the use of only ropes and harness where participants climbing their way up and down a 15-metre high building and safely evacuating victims are quite new to Fiji.

“NFA is fortunate to have 15 of our people trained and they will now be playing a leading role in NFA in divulging their newly learnt skills through the conduct of regular training programme.”

Ms Seniroqa also thanked the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department and in particular the Indonesian Government for their support that led to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department for partnership in 2014.

The six training instructors from Jakarta leave the country tomorrow.
