Powerlines, trees down as damaging winds push across South Australia
Strong winds brought down powerlines and caused trees to fall onto homes and roads across parts of Adelaide and the hills. Emergency crews attended about 40 jobs since midnight, and the callouts are expected to continue over the next few hours as a strong cold front pushes across the state.
The State Emergency Service (SES) said the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula, including Mount Barker and Strathalbyn, were among the affected areas.
Aldgate resident Terry Whitfield got a call from his wife yesterday to tell him a neighbour’s tree had fallen on their home.
“The roof ’s definitely bent but whether it’s penetrated the sheets of iron we’re not sure yet,” he said. “That was a tree I never expected to come down.”
A severe weather warning for damaging winds was current for a large part of the state.
SES state duty officer Brenton Clarke said there were no reports of injuries, but the windy conditions were expected to linger.
“There’s been a few jobs where trees have come down onto homes,” he said.
“At Mount Barker, a tree’s actually come down on a house and put a hole into the roof. There’s another one at Noarlunga as well.
“We’re expecting the conditions and jobs and taskings and requests for assistance to continue in the afternoon.”
