A last minute surge saw Marist Brothers High School beat Queen Victoria School 10-8 in the Under-16 quarterfinals of the Coke Zero Deans Trophy at Buckhurst Park, Suva yesterday.

MBHS U16 manager, Marica Raratabu was content with their performance as they played their hearts out to the last minute.

“The team played really well as they actually kept on pushing to the last minute of the game and it was a close win for us,” Raratabu said. “One thing that really inspired me today was that the players despite losing to QVS in the second half never lost hope but went on to secure another try for the side to take the lead minutes before full time.

“We had expected a win and the boys had put in a lot of effort and sacrifice for this game and I am very thankful for the win.

“Unfortunately, in the under-16 grade last year we lost in the semifinal which was disappointing so the boys this year have set a goal of making it through to the final. And I have faith in my boys that they are able to achieve that.

“I thank the Marist Brothers Old Boys, school management and parents for coming out in numbers and supporting our team which really encouraged them to win.”

In other matches Lelean Memorial School edged out Ratu Navula College 20-14 followed by Ratu Kadavulevu School thrashing Nasinu Secondary School 26-3 while Natabua High School beat Suva Grammar School 14-12.

Meanwhile, in the first semifinal sees Lelean Memorial School take on Marist Brothers High School while Natabua High School take on Ratu Kadavulevu School.
