GLOBAL WARMING DOCUMENTARY
DEWAN CHAND SUVA I have just seen a documentary on global warming titled “An Inconvenient Sequel—Truth to Power”, and was deeply touched by it. The aerial photographs taken from the helicopter stuns ones' mind to the impending dangers of global warming and the catastrophe which awaits mankind. The key player in this documentary is Al Gore – the former Vice President of the United States, Barrack Obama, the former President and the current President Donald Trump. Al Gore's tireless fight to train activists and influence international climate policies is admirable indeed. The world leaders met in Paris, France, to discuss the issues and to reach an amicable understanding of this very serious issue. There are divergent views amongst the world leaders from the developed, developing and under developed countries. The rich developed countries are asking for cleaner sources of power the developing countries are desperate to provide power to millions of their citizens who still live in darkness in the 21st century. For these countries providing power to their people is paramount and not the source of power. Even if they have to use coal and petroleum, the great pollution causing sources, they still want to go ahead. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, made his stand very clear. Thus Al Gore was forced into talking to Indian energy leaders to reach a compromise through which financial assistance and solar technology could be provided so that India could harness clean sources of energy. Today India has gone big on solar and wind power. Even third world countries are being assisted by India at Barefoot College in training people to build their own solar panels. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is the head of COP23 and we can well imagine the enormous responsibility on his shoulders to find a common ground and an acceptable international climate policy. A huge chunk of humanity will drown in the sea if the current rate of glacial melting continues. Mankind has no choice but to use its ingenuity and passion to tackle the perils of climate change. I appeal to all school heads to show this documentary to their students. They need to understand the dangers which can affect them unless the global community addresses the issues relating to climate change.
