Makoi Maternity Facility To Ease Overcrowding At Suva Hospital
The new $6.9million Makoi Maternity Facility in Nasinu is going to solve overcrowding at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital maternity ward.
In a statement on Friday by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services confirmed that they have allocated $890,000 to purchase equipment for the new maternity facility as stated in the June 2017-2018 National Budget.
The new facility will have three delivery rooms and will start with 18 beds for low risk birth.
The facility is going to cater for the growing population in the surrounding areas of Makoi, Narere, Nadawa, Manikoso, Laqere, Kalabu and Valelevu.
The new facility will also be a referral point for low risk maternity patients from the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. “The primary focus will be on antenatal care for low risk mothers who live in the vicinity of the centre,” the statement said.
“Once this service is established, we will then look at the post natal care which involves mothers and babies, and this will have to be coordinated with the public health team and pediatric team at CWMH.” These new developments should enhance the maternity services and advance health care services with easy accessibility in the Suva Nausori corridor, the ministry stated.
The facility will provide low risk delivery (birthing) services and day clinics. It will also include pharmacy services, laboratory, scanning and family planning services and counseling services under one roof.
It will start with antenatal clinics at the site and later on address low risk birthing services.
Associated services, such as the ambulance service, are in the pipeline.
