Queens Engage With Suva Market Community
More interaction with people offers one the knowledge to understand society better, says Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus queen contestant Miss Fulton Hogan Hiways Karalaini Korovulavula. She was amongst the queen contestants who toured the Suva Market and engaged with the vendors yesterday.
Ms Korovulavula said you get to appreciate the hard work they do to contribute to the country’s economy.
“Visiting the market vendors gives us a chance to know them and hear their stories of where they are from and how they struggle to supply fresh vegetables for us and everyone around the country,” Ms Korovulavula said.
Miss RecruitmentFiji.com, Serenia Raura said: “The market vendors might not all come to enjoy the festival as they have to cater for their families, so it is important as contestants, to ensure that they know us because we represent them.” Hibiscus Queen co-ordinator Jane Kanas said they wanted people at all levels to know the queen contestants.
“The market vendors were excited to see the Hibiscus queens and greeted them with their warm smiles,” Ms Kanas said.
“We want to bring the contestants to the people so they can meet and know their queen contestants,” she said. Meanwhile, the queen and king contestants also underwent a Water Champions programme conducted by the Water Authority of Fiji last Wednesday.
Chief executive officer Opetaia Ravai, said the Water Champions Programme was designed to raise awareness and “create an appreciation of water, to understand the whole process and know some facts about water, and to be the voice for water conservation.
“This is in keeping with the 2017 Hibiscus Festival theme of Climate Change.”
Authority general manager for Customer Services Sekove Uluinayau presented Certificates of Participation to all the contestants.
He encouraged all the participants to advocate as Water Champions in their communities.
“Since women are said to be the largest users of water worldwide, we especially encourage the Queen contestants to spread the water conservation message and to support women seeking employment opportunities at the WAF, especially in the field of engineering.
“This would be beneficial for WAF and the wider community. ”
