Student with special need aims to become a parliamentarian
Speaker Luveni visits St Joseph’s Secondary School
Asenaca Tuivuravura’s disability did not dampen her spirit as she wanted to be with the rest of the students to listen to the Speaker of Parliament during her ‘Meet the Speaker’ programme yesterday at Saint Joseph’s Secondary School.
Together with her teachers and other students, the 17-year-old found the programme informative and educational.
“After today’s programme, I now understand how Parliament works, how debates are done in Parliament and how the law is processed,” she said.
“My aim is to become a Member of Parliament and to be the Attorney-General. “My advice to other students with disability is that whenever you want to do something, you should not be double-minded, and you should always dream big.”
The school’s Social Science Head of Department, Tara Tamata, said the programme was well received by students.
“A lot of questions that the students had were answered during the Speaker’s presentation,” Ms Tamata said. “I am glad that this programme goes out to the community and promotes the idea of Parliament as some think that it just belongs to a certain part of Fiji. “The fact that you have come out to promote awareness with the students was really interesting.” The programme is a community outreach initiative of Parliament where the Speaker, Dr Jiko Luveni, explains to the students about her role as Speaker, roles and function of Parliament and how students can be involved in the democratic process.
