Contestants of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North have been urged by Vodafone Fiji Broadband Services manager Keshwin Lal to lead by example during the weeklong festival.

“Raise awareness on issues such as land degradation, indiscriminate burning particularly in the sugarcane belts, deforestation and provide alternatives to such environmentally unfriendly practices,” Mr Lal said.

Mr Lal was speaking during the Variety Night on Saturday at Subrail Park in Labasa and encouraged the contestants to utilise the platform to strongly advocate on the theme ‘healthy environment, healthy people’.

“Raise awareness on issues such as land degradation, indiscriminate burning particularly in the sugarcane belts, deforestation and provide alternatives to such environmentally unfriendly practices,” Mr Lal said. “Vodafone is proud to be the name behind the festival and with good governance of the committee we have witnessed some great initiatives for the Northern communities.

“With a bond of nine years, Vodafone once again stepped in

to support this year’s festival.” He said the organisers had impressed the sponsors with the transparency of the use of funds raised for the greater good of the Northern community.

“This year’s theme means healthy and productive people and we aspire to build capacities in areas drawing from experiences of experts from our world of different candidates, from charity partners,” he said.

Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North president Subhash Chandra said as of today the festival committee had spent a total of $1.3 million in implementing community projects.
