St John’s College In For First
St John’s College Under-19 team aims to keep notching the firsts in the Tuckers Fijian Secondary Schools Basketball Championships which started in Suva yesterday.
This is the first time the Ovalaubased school is participating in the tournament.
U-19 team captain Frederick Spanner believes after winning the Suva Open in March, they are confident of another positive outing. “Our aim is to win and we want to create history for our school,” Spanner said.
They defeated International Secondary School Suva 27-13 in their first match yesterday. Meanwhile defending U-15 boys champion Yat Sen Secondary School (YSS) lost their first game against Jai Narayan in a tightly contested match 12-14.
Last year’s U-15 girls champion Suva Grammar lost their first pool game against St Joseph’s Secondary 6-18.
Games director and Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau was impressed.
“It’s encouraging to see the level of excitement and enthusiasm on display from the players,” Puamau said.
“I would like to acknowledge Tuckers Ice Cream for the 9th year of partnership.
“The partnership benefits 47 secondary schools from Suva, Nadi, Lautoka and Levuka and the 576 players features in the three-day event.” Results: U15 girls; SJSS 18 – 5 SGS, LDS 5- 5 YSS; U15 boys; MBHS 25 – 18 LDS, YSS 12 – 14 JNC, SVC 10 – 13 ISS; U17 girls; SJSS 27- 0 SVC, ACS 2313 JNC, YSS 12- 8 SVC, JNC 11- 18 SJSS, LDS 16-11 SJC, SGS 24-19 DHS, LDS 12-11 SGS;
