Our Production 2 at top NZ conference

Two Fiji Sun Production staff members have been attending New Zealand’s top conference for newspaper production managers and printers, known as SWUG.

Prepress Supervisor Rayape Karavaki-Qumivutia and Press Lead Colour Hand Joana Bueta were sent to New Zealand by the Fiji Sun. It is part of continuing developmen­t of production capacity. They attended the SWUG conference in Auckland. They also spent time at two quality-leading newspaper production sites, the Whakatane Beacon in Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, and Beacon Print at Hastings, Hawke’s Bay.

Fiji Sun Publisher/CEO Peter Lomas said: “Every year we send some of our Production people to SWUG and for site attachment­s in New Zealand. They see and experience best practice and developmen­t.

“Brendon Whitley, managing director of our longtime press equipment suppliers Webco, has connection­s throughout New Zealand newspapers. He opens doors and makes sure our people get the very best of access and help.” Ms Karavaki-Qumivutia and Ms Bueta are groundbrea­kers in newspaper production. Ms Bueta was the first women to successful­ly work on a web press in Fiji. She now runs Fiji Sun press operations some nights. Ms Kara va ki Q um ivut ia was the first woman appointed to a supervisor­y role in the Production Department. Both are on their second training trip to New Zealand.

“We’re proud of them,” Mr Lomas said.
