The 56-yearold Bangladeshi visitor who became the victim of a horrific road accident on Saturday morning was buried on the same night. Mumtaz Ali Gani, the head of grave volunteer group, confirmed that Mahfujur Rahman was buried at the Nasinu Cemetery in Naulu, Nakasi.

The late Mr Rahman was standing alongside the Imam of the Nasole Mosque, Mohammed Faiyaz, waiting to cross the road to the mosque when they were hit by a car.

It is alleged that the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol.

Mr Rahman came to the country with four of his compatriots on a three-month visit two months ago and was to depart on October 3. Mohammed Idris, leader of the contingent, said he had been in contact with the deceased’s family and they had expressed their sadness. However, he said that they were thankful that no one else was killed.

“It was God’s will that our friend is no longer with us,” he said. “But, we are very sad that we are returning home with one less from our number. We will continue our tour in Fiji, meet our Fijian brothers and sisters here and return ho-

me.”

On Saturday, witnesses said that the suspect fled the scene. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the suspect was in custody. “However, charges would only be laid on the accused once investigators have finalised investigations and compiled relevant reports,” Ms Naisoro said.

Speed breakers

Meanwhile, resident, Mohammed Riaz, has called on authorities to look at the possibility of installing speed breakers or traffic lights on the busy stretch of road.

Mr Riaz who is also a member of the Nasole Mosque Committee said: “If you look at this area there have previously been some accidents happening here and I always see vehicles speeding through.”

Mr Faiyaz is in stable condition, Mr Riaz said.
