After a lapse of 25 years, Greenstar FC have qualified for the 2017 Vodafone National Club Championship final playoffs. The Mohammed Shamim coachedside are out to make their mark after they topped their pool during the Vodafone National Club Championship’s western zone playoffs at Prince Charles Park, Nadi on Sunday

Greenstar FC hammered Service Sports 3-1, with goals coming from Tito Rai, Ravi Singh and Tomasi Tuicakau while national rep Kavaia Rawaqa socred Service only goal. Greenstar head coach, Mohammed Shamim said they last won the championship in 1992, so they would be going into the tournament as underdogs.

“We’ve already won three times, our last club championship win was in 1992 so after more than 20 years we’re taking part in the NCC and want to win as well,” he said. “We will be going in the game as underdogs and will be carrying Nadroga’s name with us.” Shamim applauded the teams’ efforts and credited the win to the physical fitness of the boys. “The hard work was naturally done by the boys as they did the hard yards, they performed well and physical fitness made a difference,” he said.

“They played their part well, but we will have to do our homework, because we know there will be tough competition.” In their second match they held DCA FC to a nil-all draw which later worked into their favour of topping their pool. Meanwhile, the finals will be played at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori on Friday, Saturday and the Fiji FA Academy grounds in Suva on Sunday.
