We’re fighting Climate change ‘pessimism’, says city council

The fight has started against the notion people have that nothing can be done about climate change. “One of the enemies that we’ll be fighting this week is pessimism,” Jone Nakauvadra, Chief Executive Officer of the Lautoka City Council said yesterday. Speaking during the Climate Change Week in Lautoka, Mr Nakauvadra said the commitment this week should not simply be an agreement of reducing pollution but rather to lift people out of poverty without condemning the next generation to an irrepairable planet. “I encourage you to take time to learn as much as you can about climate change and the little steps you can take individually or collectively to mitigate its impact.”

Mr Nakauvadra said with climate change, if people acted now and place short term interests behind them, air young people breath, the food they eat, the water they drink and their hopes and dreams will sustain their lives.”

He said acting now and accepting this challenge to fight climate change will not reward one with moments of victory that was clear or quick.

“Our progress will be measured differently – in the suffering that is averted and a planet that is preserved.”

“Our generation may not even live to see the full realisation of what we do here.”

He said if all this was done now, the future generation will look back and take pride in our achievements.
