University of Fiji vice-chancellor Professor Prem Misir will publish a new book documenting the plight of indentured Indian women. The Subaltern Indian Woman: Domination and Social Degradation chronicles the exploitation of these women, and their tug of war with race, gender and class oppression.

The book’s publisher, Palgrave Macmillan in a flyer said the book explained how different social structures, such as class and gender, had an impact on the opportunities and experiences of these women. Palgrave Macmillan is a global publisher which publishes award-winning research across the humanities, social sciences and business for academics, professionals and librarians.

With offices in London, New York and Shanghai, and sales teams across 50 countries, the publishers have an international reach.

“The book particularly presents (subaltern) Indian women’s fight against the system of indentured labour, while also acknowledging that people located in different structures are eventually influenced by their varied experiences and opportunities,” said the flyer.

Professor Misir, targeting high school students, is also the principal investigator for an international study on the knowledge and stigma related to HIV and AIDS in Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Vanuatu and Fiji.

In 2013, Professor Misir published a book HIV and AIDS Knowledge and Stigma in Guyana, and hopes to design an effective method in a similar way aimed at reducing stigma-related perceptions with his new study.

He has also penned ten books and a number of peer-reviewed journal articles along with various other publications.
