Tavua To Pay Players For IDC

- ARIETA VAKASUKAWAQA Edited by Leone Cabenatabua

Newly promoted Flick Tavua football team’s preparation for the 2017 Interdistrict Championship received a major boost after receiving $7000 sponsorship from Flick Anticimex (Amalgamated Pest Control). Speaking to SUNsports on Friday, Tavua Football Association president, Pranesh Prakash said the funds would assist their team’s preparations for the IDC.

“We’ve been struggling financially in terms of supporting our players,’’ he said.

“This money will be used to pay our players as most of them were low income earners and are from poor farming districts.

“For the last three years in the senior division we had no sponsors but now in our first year into the premier we are able to get a sponsor,” he added.

Prakash said they would go as underdogs in to the championship. “For us it’s like coming out from primary school into secondary, we will flick some wounds in other divisions. We’re training under former Fijian football coach, Anand Sami who has been brought in to help the team,”

Flick managing director, Mohammed Tazim said they’ve also donated training gears for the team. “We like to sponsor underdog teams who hardly find sponsors. This is to boost them and hopefully the Flick Tavua Football will make a name for themselves.

“This is a way to lighten the financial burdens on the officials and team members,” he said. Tavua coach, Saroj Kumar said their team were made up of young players and two veterans of Niteshwar Reddy and Semi Vakatalai. “We will take each game as it comes. This year we’ll be playing in the premier division and we have a very young team but we will try to do our best for the sake of our supporters.

We are urging everyone in Tavua to come out and support us,” he said.
