The Ministry’s Health Information Unit Medical Cause of Death Certificate reports the number of kidney related deaths for 2016 in Fiji is 1344.

This was revealed by the Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Alex O’Conor during the third Fijian Nephrology Symposium closing ceremony at Holiday Inn in Suva on Saturday night.

The symposium was held for two days to support kidney health in Fiji. Mr O’Conor acknowledged the international guests who travelled to Fiji for the symposium and their tremendous support in contributing towards the development of Fiji’s health services.

“These diseases cut short the lives of people and place a massive burden on our health care system,” Mr O’Conor said. “We have noted that in many cases the root cause of kidney disease lies in other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

“This International Society of Nephrology programme has supported many events for kidney advocacy in the last few years including World Kidney Day in March and this Symposium now held for the third time.

It has supported crucial education and training, and helped raise awareness on addressing kidney disease in Fiji.

“The connection grows stronger each year and I look forward to the next stage of the programme in years to come, where other countries can be added to this productive partnership.”
