MGM Primary Students Celebrate Diwali
The students of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Primary School were yesterday delighted to celebrate Diwali with one another in school.
A Year 5 student, Frances Taki Rogose, said apart from enjoying the festive spirit in the school premises, she learned about the history and culture behind celebrating the fun filled day.
“By celebrating Diwali in school with my Hindu friends I learnt about their traditions, it is something that has broadened my knowledge,” Frances said.
The school celebration was graced by the Vice-Chancellor and president of The University of the South Pacific, Professor Rajesh Chandra.
Professor Chandra enlightened the students on the significance of Diwali, which he said, was the celebration of the victory of light over darkness.
He told the students that Diwali was a chance to commit to making themselves better individuals.
“Diwali is celebrated to mark the victory of knowledge over ignorance,” Professor Chandra said.
He told the students that education was the light in their life that conquered ignorance, prejudice, hate and took one towards tolerance, love and respect for others. Children and teachers celebrated the day with dance performances, a poetry reading and distribution of sweets.
