Singh Cites ‘Creative Differences’ for PartyResignation

- LOSIRENE LACANIVALU and ARISHMA DEVI-NARAYAN Edited by Rosi Doviverata

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will contest the General Elections despite the recent resignation of Aman Ravindra-Singh. Mr Singh was PDP’s general secretary until April. He resigned citing internal differences with the board. He has now resigned as an active member of the party. He was also one of the founding members of the PDP.

Mr Singh said his resignation was due to ‘creative differences.’

When asked what he meant by this, he said, “My main reasons remain creative differences.

“It is differences which come up while trying to be creative.”

He further stated that he would not comment further on the status of the party as he was no longer a member. When asked if he planned to join another party, Mr Singh said there was no need for him to join another party as he is actively involved in the fight for human rights, the rule of law and democracy. Party leader, Lynda Tabuya said: “He has stated that he is resigning because of ‘creative differences.’ I have asked him to state what that means but he has not responded to date.

“I have accepted his resignation and wish him well in his future endeavours. “I cannot dwell on it any further because at the moment I am fully focused on the issue of fighting for workers’ rights which will culminate with the march tomorrow (today).” Meanwhile, Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC), General Secretary Felix Anthony said he was unsure about giving up his post as a unionist. He remains a member of the PDP. He was party leader during the last General Elections after stepping down from his trade union role.

“I don’t see why I need to give up anything to be a member of any political party or be an office bearer of any political party.”

Under the Political Parties Registration Decree, people cannot stand for elections if they remain officers of certain bodies including trade unions.
