Quinlan Wins Redemption Fight
Trainer Wilson says, they’ve opt for the middleweight division
Tough middleweight boxer Renold Quinlan stopped Alexander Bajawa in the second round to win his redemption fight in Singapore yesterday. Quinlan now has 28 days to prepare for his much-anticipated fight against Fedor Chudinov in Kemerov, Russia.
“Great win and thanks to my trainer,” Quinlan said after the stoppage. Speaking to SUNsports, Quinlan’s chief trainer Lepani Wilson said they’ve decided to fight in the middleweight division. “Ren easily made the middleweight division by weighing-in at 71.8kg,” he said.
“It was unfortunate that Ren in the past was made to fight in the heavier divisions like the super middleweight and light heavyweight. “That saw him lost to Chris Eubank Junior.” Wilson said they’ve reunited after Quinlan’s returned from the Eubank fight in London where he lost the IBO world super middleweight title.
“It was back to the garage for us where we worked hard on sharpening his skills and improving on the basics of ringcraft as well.”
RUSSIA FIGHT
Wilson pointed out that they’ve a short time to prepare for the next fight in Russia where they take on Chudinov.
“This is an important fight for our camp as a win will mean a step closer to another world title fight.
“The Russian is a world-class boxer and we respect him for that and has been fighting impressively.”
Now fighting in the middleweight division, Wilson says, they have set their eyes of a world title clash against Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.
“Yes we still have our eyes on GGG and we’ve doing this since 2016 before the recent setback but we’ve got to learn and move on.”
COMING TO FIJI
Wilson confirmed that Team Quinlan are looking forward for a fight in Fiji sometime next year.
“That is what Ren always wanted to fight in Fiji in front of his family since his mum is from Tailevu and he was brought up in Nepani.”
Wilson added that they’re ready to negotiate with local promoters who are wanting to promote Quinlan’s fight anywhere in Fiji.
