The Fijian Government have distributed a total of $12.7 million to 14,012 micro entrepreneurs around the country.

This was revealed by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya while distributing 807 Micro and Small Business Grant (MSBG) to recipients on Taveuni Island yesterday.

“This has a compounding effect of improving the livelihoods of 66,000 individuals and their families,” Mr Koya said to the recipients gathered at Wairiki Parish hall ground.

“Your Government prioritises the development of micro, small and medium enterprises as they lay the foundation for sustainable economic growth for our country and supports Government’s efforts in ensuring balanced development,” Mr Koya said.

“With the grant assistance provided to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and with further technical advice, we anticipate a boost in the growth of this sector.”

He said this would then improve the quality of lives for our people and respective communities.

“The growth of the sector ensures a steady source of income for the families of micro entrepreneurs to meet basic expenses incurred in everyday life.

“Furthermore, it also ensures employment generation in our communities which leads to the availability of disposable income, thus raising the level of consumption of goods and services on your island,” he said.

“An increase in consumption leads to an increase in our Gross Domestic Product(GDP) which is one of the main measures of economic performance of a country.

“This MSBG is an ongoing commitment by your Government to improve your standard of living by supporting your respective business endeavors.

“Your Government will always lend a helping hand, as we want to ensure financial stability of all Fijians.”

Mr Koya will be at four different venues this week in Vanua Levu to distribute the grants. Tomorrow (Wednesday) he will be in Savusavu, the following day in Labasa, Friday in Seaqaqa and end distribution at Nabouwalu on Saturday.
