Shop owners in Karsanji Street, Vatuwaqa, Suva are calling on the Fiji Police Force to catch the culprits who allegedly broke into their shops on Sunday night.

This comes after seven shops were broken into and items such as cash, car stereos and mechanical tools were stolen.

Engineering and Industrial Supplies representative Robin Lal alleges that the culprits could be the three men spotted by their security guard after the heavy downpour on the same night had stopped.

He said when the security officer had tried to approach the alleged thieves the trio fled the scene.

Mr Lal said their shop was first broken into before the rest were also targeted. Mr Lal said around $1500 cash was stolen from their shop while around $100 to $200 cash went missing from the next two shops respectively.

“They damaged the video cameras in one of the shops and damaged the Digital Video Disc (DVD) player of the security camera; now we do not have any image to assist in the investigations,” he said.

According to Mr Lal, Police officers had arrived at the scene the same night and interviewed the security guard, while the forensic team visited the premises yesterday. The other six shops broken into were Water Solutions Fiji Limited, Vinen Motor Repairs, Nath Panel Beaters, Aero Stainless Steel, Kumar’s Quality Timber and Kumar’s Investments.

“This is the first time for a break-in of this magnitude, for a whole row of shops to be broken in. We just hope the culprits are caught,” he said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that they have only received three reports and these were from two engineering shops and a timber yard.

Ms Naisoro said no one was arrested and investigations were continuing.
