Bajekal: Focus on Moral Values, Personality Too, Not Just on Qualifications

RECRUITMENT PROCESS NEEDS EMPHASIS ON THIS GUIDELINE

Human resources specialists were reminded that they need to put more emphasis on a person’s personality and moral values rather than just focusing on their qualifications.

FMF Foods Group of Companies managing director Ram Bajekal believes these were catalysts of a successful organisation which were usually ignored.

He added that the recruitment process needs to focus more on this guideline.

He raised this issue while speaking to participants at the BSP Fiji Human Resources Institute National Convention 2017 at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island yesterday.

Mr Bajekal spoke on the topic ‘Retention Strategies for Millennials – are they really different?’

He added it was important to note that retaining workers started before they were hired which was only through the recruitment process. This however, was something new to the millennials.

“During interviews start looking at their attributes but the recommendation is usually looking at qualifications,” Mr Bajekal said.

“Let us not look at skills and experience, let us look at the values, the personality of a person and if the person will fit into the working environment.

“Before you hire a millennial see how it fits in what you looking to do and when we are recruiting. That is where we start our retention not after they have joined.”

He said organisations should put more emphasis on the need for workplaces to retain millennials in a world where there was a rapid change in technology.

Mr Bajekal believes that they were bred in a world where technology was readily available.

They are usually considered individuals who reached their adulthood around the turn of the 21st of the century. They were born between the years 1981 to 2000 and also known as Generation Y.

He said the millennial generation were born after 1982 and these were workers who were up to 35.

Bajekal said for organisations to put more emphasis on the need for workplaces to retain millennials in a world where there is a rapid change in technology.
