FIJI RUGBY UNION TO
BECOME A COMPANY
The Fiji Rugby Union will now have the opportunity to invest and make profits to assist with its operations and reinvestment of funds back to grassroots and club rugby.
This was after the adoption of FRU’s Constitution (Article of an Association) during the Special General Meeting at the ANZ Stadium corporate booth yesterday. This will allow FRU to register and change their structure from a Charitable Trust that they are currently registered as into a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee.
FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor explained how they went about their way to bring about the changes.
“After seeking legal advice and consultations with union members, the board felt that the best option is for FRU to move and register itself as a registered company. Today we endorsed the constitution that supports the move in the special general meeting,” he said.
“We have been doing consultations for the past two months with all the unions in the Western, Central and Northern. We had a workshop where members were given opportunities to comment.
I’m happy that the draft and changes have been made. The unions have supported this move.” O’Connor said they were always breaching their registration guidelines before when they were registered under the Charitable Trust. “With the change, we will now be able to strive to make profits and reinvest these funds in investments and back assist support grassroots rugby.
He said FRU will apply for registration once the lawyers are ready with all paperwork.
