Stay Alert, be Vigilant, Protect the Community

- ROSI DOVIERATA

The increase in aggravated robberies and burglaries figures released by the Fiji Police Force over the past two months is alarming. And to forecast that the situation may get worse in the coming days is worrying.

Therefore the urgent call for vigilance from our Police chief should be taken seriously.

Police have also noted that aggravated robberies and burglaries are being committed by opportunists. For the month of September in the Southern division, there were 44 cases recorded by Police as being carried out by opportunists.

Another concern highlighted by the Police Commissioner was that persons involved in aggravated robberies and burglaries included those who were currently out on bail.

Collaboration among relevant stakeholders to address this issue is vital with a holistic approach in mind.

But ultimately, the onus is on us, the public, to ensure that we take all precautionary measures to avoid becoming the next aggravated robbery or burglary victim.

To assist us, Police have identified red spots where these incidences occur.

In Suva, some of these areas include:

Suva Bus Stand, Fiji Development Bank (FDB) Foreshore, Waimanu, Road, Victoria Parade Suva, High St Toorak, Central St Suva, Carnarvon St, Sukuna Park, Selbourne Street, Nabukalou Bridge and Cumming Street to name a few.

In the West, the areas include: Namaka, Westfield Road Votualevu, Waqadra, Kulukulu and Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) compound Namaka. Here are some practical preventative tips:
