The Ministry of Education handed over five boats to schools in Kadavu, Rewa, and Cakaudrove on Wednesday. In Kadavu, Eliki Memorial School and Natusara Primary School, in Rewa Vutia District School and Rewa Secondary School and in Cakaudrove Naiviivi District School received a boat each from Government. The total cost of these boats were more than $75,306.

Natusara Primary School manager Cagilevu Naitauyavu said: “It will be a big boost for the students as the school is in a very remote island and the boat was an urgent need.

“This boat will be a motivation as well for the students to work harder and achieve good marks,” he said. Mr Naitauyavu said the school is located in Ono and the boat would transport students.

In the past six years Government donated two boats to the school but both were damaged.

He said the students’ stay in the hostel from Monday to Friday, and go home in the weekend.

The school has a roll of more than 40 students from Year 1 to Year 8 and provides education to the two villages of Bulia and Dravuni.

Director for National Substances Abuse Advisory Services, Manoa Senikarawa urged the school managers that the boat should be used for its purpose and not abuse it. He said parents, teachers, and school management are all responsible for taking care and looking after school resources.

Safety kits were also handed over as part of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji regulations.

One engine was also handed over to Rewa Secondary School.
