Young Orators to Raise Awareness, Share Stories on Climate Change
For 12-year-old Timoci Naulusala of Naivicula and 10-year-old Shalvi Shakshi, climate change has been something they considered close to their hearts.
Naulusala was the winner while Shakshi came second during the National climate change oratory contests, winning them a trip to Germany, an initiative by the Fijian Government and UNICEF.
They aim to raise awareness and share their stories on how climate change is affecting their home, i.e. Fiji.
Shalvi who is mature for her age and very outspoken, aspires to make her family and country proud.
“I am so proud and excited and at the same time since this is my first international trip,” she said.
“Ever since I was given a chance in the oratory competition, I did not want to give up and was determined and passionate about the issue which has resulted from human activities.
“I would like to thank the honorable Prime Minister of our country, my mum and dad and my class mates for giving me this once in a life time chance.” Meanwhile Timoci said climate change is real and he will ensure his message is heard.
“Climate change is not just by mouth, it is really happening and it is real, as you can see it is happening in the world right now, which is causing cyclones, earth quakes, etc.”
“When I speak in front of all the world leaders, I will be brave and ensure that my message on climate change is delivered in such a way that it moves them.”
“This is just a stepping stone for me, as I wish to be a journalist and share with the world my views.”
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Communication Specialist Cate Heinrich said the two winners will be able to get more exposure and share their experience when they come back.
“They never really had a chance to travel out of their village, let alone their province. This is a really exciting opportunity for them,” she said.
“It’s their first time on a plane and they will be able to learn a lot and bring back to their community and class mates.
“To be able to share their story with the rest of the world I think that’s really important and the world can hear how climate change is affecting the Pacific Islands already and why it is important to take action now.”
