Resident of Navakai Jenny Osbourne raised her grief recently on the increasing number of rubbish that is being piled near her area.

She said the dumping of rubbish has been happening recently.

“I’ve been living here for over 23 years now.

“It’s the person dumping their rubbish here and it’s the same household which is polluting the whole area.”

The area where the rubbish is located is near Nadi Muslim High School which is also a few metres away from the Nadi Sports Club.

Despite her efforts trying to clean it up or even going to the extent of informing the school, still nothing has been done. “This is out of the town boundary so we do not have rubbish trucks coming to collect our rubbish,” Ms Osbourne said. “The stench and sight is not pleasing to see and I have cleaned this area a couple of times now, but still they continue to dump the rubbish.”

“It would be good they use other alternative methods like burying what needs to be buried and burning the rest.”

Nadi Town Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Dinning confirmed that the area is not within the town council boundary and it belongs to the Nadi Rural Authority.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Praveen Bala also raised this concern during the Pre-Event Launch of the Nadi Town 70th Anniversary Celebrations and City Declaration Date on Monday.

He said that engagement of towns and city in addressing environmental issues is of utmost importance since Nadi is soon to become a city.

“We need to address environmental issues that we are facing and how we can best engage our towns and cities.”

“Cleanliness like charity begins at home and a clean and green environment is the key to local action on climate change, particularly in our towns and cities.”.
