The Fiji Airways Flying Fijians are closely following the progress of the Vodafone Fijian Bati at the Rugby League World Cup in Australia. Coach John McKee is hoping the Fijians will do a double against Italy this weekend.

McKee and his men are in Sicily preparing for the test against Italy in Catania on Sunday in the first of the three November internationals.

The Fijian Bati plays Italy at Canberra Stadium on Friday in the final pool match after good performances against United States and Wales.

“The players have been following the progress of the Bati,”McKee said.

“Let’s hope Fiji can make it a double over Italy this weekend.”

The Flying Fijians beat Italy at the ANZ Stadium in June and McKee hopes his men will keep the momentum this weekend. He said players are settling down well since they arrived on Sunday. “Weather is good about 18-20 degrees,”McKee said. “Players used beach near our hotel for recovery following training sessions

“Most players in camp now with Kalivati Tawake, Nikola Matawalu and Peceli Yato joining the squad. “Dominiko Waqaniburotu has remained at his club in France for treatment/rehab on a hamstring injury.

“We will monitor his progress and he will join the squad later.”

He said the squad stepped up intensity at training as players compete for test spots He was really impressed with Nemani Nadolo who scored two tries for Montpellier in their win over Clermont on Monday. “Nadolo’s really hitting form now following his off-season break. One of the season’s top try scorers in France,”McKee said.

He is also pleased with the progress made by Olympian Semi Kunatani who plays club rugby for Toulouse.

“Semi is fitting in well. He is in the Flying Fijians as a backrow (where he has been playing at his club). He is training well and pressing his claims on a position in the test team.”
