FEA Plans to Use Electric Cars to Read Meters

- JYOTI PRATIBHA Edited by Ranoba Baoa

The Fiji Electricity Authority plans to use electric cars for staff to read meters in homes and commercial properties. FEA chairperson Daksesh Patel made the revelation in Bonn, Germany, while participating in a series of panel discussions on the margins of COP23.

Mr Patel also saw first-hand how dozens of electric cars are currently being used to shuttle participants between the two zones -- Bula Zone and Bonn Zone for various events.

He stressed that FEA was keen to do all it could to help Fiji achieve its goal of decreasing its carbon footprint.

“We have already talked with another major Government public enterprise sector which is now working jointly with us to introduce electric vehicles. FEA would be pursuing this with reputable electric vehicle providers and we will be introducing this very shortly,” he said.

He said while this was their short-term plan, FEA also had some long term plans such as installing charging ports throughout the country where electric vehicles could be charged. He said it would provide incentives to entice people to invest in electric cars.

“Fiji Electricity Authority is committed to this because our business is selling electricity and we will do everything to facilitate this. We are committed to put charging stations in all key strategic stations in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. We will also come up with innovative schemes such as providing a discount to promote electric vehicle industry in Fiji. It will directly reduce the carbon footprint which is the NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) objective and Government’s objective and we would like to play a part in that. “Through this we would also like to increase the electricity sale. This would be good business for us and can be a win-win situation for Fiji Electricity Authority, motor vehicle industry and the country.”

FEA also had some long term plans such as installing charging ports throughout the country where electric vehicles could be charged.
