YES PROGRAMME TO SUPPORT YOUNG DREAMS
The Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) is expected to help sustainable growth and modernisation of the Fijian economy. Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism Shaheen Ali speaking at the University of the South Pacific last week said the prgramme sees the development of new innovative ideas. He said technologies can further elevate the strong growth that Fijian economy is experiencing. “Hence, it is critical to develop an ecosystem that rewards innovation and newly discovered knowledge. With this in mind, the Fijian Government launched the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES),” he said. Mr Ali said the YES initiative targets the development of young entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and essentially gives voice or outlet to the talents of young Fijians. “Through YES, the Fijian Government is committed to securing a better future for all. “There is no doubt that technology and innovation will drive economic growth in the future and Fiji needs to prepare to be at the forefront of this evolution.” He said the ministry would be providing financial support of up to $20,000 to young budding Fijian entrepreneurs between 18 and 30 years, to develop or expand their innovative business ideas. Mr Ali said every Fijian had a talent and the ministry would help them get to the next stage, by providing the young youths start-up capital, business mentoring and support service. “As a Government, it is very important for us that you achieve your full potential. We want to back projects in sectors that will make Fiji shine, amongst the best in the world. We want to create new opportunities and open up new markets.” He added that the YES initiative, is the Government’s willingness to take the risk for young people and there were willing to support their dream and help it become a reality. Earlier last week, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya said the scheme process was still in its infancy stage with applications still rolling in.
