Inconsiderate drivers

Mike Dorsett, Ba

-

Whilst driving back from Ba on Saturday, we were held up by two traffic accidents, one of which blocked a single lane bridge by the land slip. While waiting in the queue for the traffic to move, we were disgusted to see several minibus drivers and taxis force their way to the head of the queue by driving up the wrong side of the road - even forcing oncoming traffic - legitimate drivers- off the road.

As well as committing a moral offence of queue jumping, they are also committing moving traffic offences of driving on the wrong side of the road, lack of consideration to other road users, and acting in a manner likely to cause an accident.

They are also blocking traffic trying to depart the scene thus causing added congestion. It seems these drivers do not care about other road users as long as they can make as much money as possible.

The Police and Land Transport Authority (LTA) need to increase their turn out to serious accidents like this so they have one team to manage the accident, and one team to manage the traffic.

It also seems that Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers need to have an attitude test every six months to retain their licence. Perhaps LTA also need to review the standard of driving instructors with respect to lane discipline, another aspect sadly lacking in Fijian drivers.
