Labasa tops ear, nose, throat help needs

Ateam of local medical staff is part of the Cathay General Hospital Medical mobile team in Labasa this week to conduct Ear-Nose-Throat consultati­ons and surgeries.

The highly specialise­d Taiwan team conducted consultati­ons yesterday and are expected to be carrying out operations today.

Team leader Taiwan’s Cathay General Hospital (ENT) Dr Su-Yi Hsu said although there was no record on the number of those with nasal problems nationally she can confirm that following the last field trip to Labasa has recorded the highest.

“There is no official data to show how many people in Fiji have nasal problems, in our last visit we found that a lot of patients in Labasa have throat diseases, nasal problems like chronic rhino sinusitis

that need further treatment and surgery,” Dr Hsu said. “They have nasal polyps or suffer from nasal obstructio­n and since there are no ENT doctors in Fiji, our help is more beneficial to the people of Labasa,” she said.

Dr Hsu is accompanie­d by Dr Wan-Husan and two Taiwanese nurses.

The Taiwan Cathay General Hospital mobile team has been coming to Fiji since 2014.

Since then seven mobile medical teams comprising of 54 medical staff have visited hospitals here and have examined about 2500 patients.

Patients with conditions including Ear/Nose/Throat and have Thyroid goiter problems are urged to contact the surgical unit at the Labasa Hospital for an appointmen­t.

The team will be at the CWM Hospital in Suva next week on Monday. Seven teams with over 54 medical staff examined around 2,500 patients in Kadavu, Rakiraki, Ba, Tavua, Lautoka, Sigatoka, Korolevu , Lomaiwai, Cuvu, Labasa, Nabouwalu, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Labasa, Nabouwalu, Savusavu and have examined and treated more than 600 students of Marist Brothers High School and Yat –Sen Primary school in Suva.

We will go with our banners, flags to show our support towards the victim. We will be at the court house to listen to the hearing
