Salex Shipping and Freight operations manager Surend Pillay weathered the downpour last Saturday and emerged unfazed as he recorded a magnificent 5 under par 64 to become the new Geotech Drilling International Limited Lautoka Season Opening tournament.

The quiet-spoken Pillay, along with the remainder of the field were drenched during heavy showers which failed to dampen the spirit of the golfers.

The day also highlighted the emergence of Alex Qiokata, a junior golfer who has been involved with the junior development programme at LGC, who won the C grade title.

The 13-year-old recorded 67 nett to beat Arnold Arvind Pillay and Mohammed Riaz of Sydney. For Pillay being crowned overall champion could put him in the front foot for this weekend’s Geotech Drilling International Limited and Islands Electric Lautoka Open. In the B grade, Mohammed Intiaz pulled ina score of 62 nett and edged out Rusiate Kauniloloma who recorded 67 and Abdul Jalal who was third on 68 nett.

In the A grade, Islands Electric staff, 60 year old Gaffer Ali, who helped shape the golf course in his younger days was declared the winner with 65 nett, followed by Anthony John on 66 nett and land Transport Authority staff Vinesh Murthi third on 67.
