The 2017 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival’s Charity Chest raised over $ 140,000, the highest amount ever raised in the history of the festival.

The awarding of the charity distribution was held yesterday afternoon at the Albert Park Pavilion in Suva, with sponsors donating to 24 organisations.

Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala was chief guest.

Mr Bala commended the efforts of the Charity Chest.

“My congratulations and a big thank you to all the sponsors for deciding to distribute charity for funds,” Mr Bala said. Fulton Hogan Hiways was the highest contributor to the Charity Chest with over $35,000, while the Homes of Hope received the highest individual donation of $31,950. Mr Bala further commended the Hibiscus Event Group and the Water Authority of Fiji for the success of a new waste water management concept, which was implemented during this year’s festival.

The concept was targeted to treat all food outlet wastewater before being discharged into the environment aligned with the festival’s theme “Climate Change: Telling our own Narrative”.

“This concept will now be taken on board by the other township festivals within the coming year, for the purpose of creating awareness and ensuring that waste water effective management can be introduced at our grassroots level,” he said.
