In a move to revive boxing in the North, a big promotion set for December 16 was launched in Labasa on Wednesday. Canada Fiji Southern Boxing promoter Simon Naushad said they’re bringing the top boxers from Viti Levu to take on the best from the Northern Division.

“It’s going to be a Vanua versus Viti boxing rumble with the aim to revive the sport in the north,” he said.

Naushad said boxing was popular in Vanua Levu but interest had died over the years due to inactivity.

The North has been renowned for producing top boxers like Samuela Vocea, Joe Keresi, Inia Catarogo, Subash Chand, Sikeli Veitala, Noa Bukai, Atama Raqili, Tevita Vakalalabure, Jare Lalakai, Setefano Vasuibau, Lepani Bote, Jim Anthony, Ben Lanyon, Sharmat Shah, Bobby Shah, Arif Ali, Gyan Kumar, Taslim Shah, Nat Ledua, Poasa Tamaidilewa, Sikeli Gavidi and the list goes on.

“That is why we’re bringing boxing back to the North, to revive the game as there are lots of hidden talents.”

The proposed 10-round main bout sees unbeaten Siliveni Nawai of Mulomulo Boxing Club, Nadi taking on homeboy and 2003 South Pacific Games gold medallist Osea Nakanacagi.

Northern Boxing Association technical adviser Emitai Bulivakarua said they’re expecting a tough competition from Viti Levu boxers who have been fighting regularly.

He has called on the boxers to start with their training.
