Cancer Society is $12,700 Richer
Hardware company Kasabias donates to cancer society for the first time.
Kasabias Trust and comp[any staff sealed their commitment to support the Fiji Cancer Society with a cheque handover at Kasabias head office yesterday. The Trust gave a $10,000 cheque and an additional $2700 cheque were donated from the pockets of the company’s staff members and customers. Kasabias chief executive officer Chaminda Wanninayake said Kasabias Trust was established exactly for these sorts of charitable activities. “Kasabias Trust was actually established by the founders of Kasabias 20 years back for the purpose of assisting those in need, especially in education, sports and health matters,” he said.
Mr Wanninayake said the inspiration to donate stemmed from their employees.
“Actually, our staff took the initiative to make a contribution collected from the staff and the customers – so the amount of $2700 was collected by the staff,” he said.
“Then we, as the management decided to donate another $10,000.”
Fiji Cancer Society chief executive officer Belinda Chan said she had ‘goosebumps’ yesterday when Mr Wanninayake informed her of the donation amount. “I was just floored because for the first time the company has to come onboard and support us with the work we do,” she said.
“I never expected this and every amount we receive is greatly and sincerely appreciated.” Ms Chan said every cent donated to the Fiji Cancer Society assists patients with transportation, the provision of drugs, supplies, medical beds and medical oxygen, which then enables doctors to conduct their diagnosis. “When we supply these things, there is no dollar value attached for the patients – it’s all done free of charge,” she said.
“So, whatever you give us enables us to provide for our patients.”
Ms Chan said 2017 had been very generous to the Fiji Cancer Society.
“It’s been a great year for us at the society – Pinktober moving into November has just been overwhelming considering all the responses from the respective corporates and churches.” Mr Wanninayake said Kasabias Trust was looking to expand their charitable activities in the future.
